World Communism Team: Season 52 Part IV

Written by World Communism Team at 11:56 28/4-2020

After having narrowly missed out on a Division 7 win several times this season, World Communism Team shifted its entire focus to Denmark Rundt om Vejle, a historic race counted amongst the oldest events in the OCM calendar. Arguably one of the most important one-day races in Division 7, one of the major hills events in the lower divisions, and part of an official achievement.

Making this race particularly coveted at this level of competition, are the unusually high points and prize money awarded to its top 9 finishers. Only rivaled by races in Division 3 and higher.

Many World Communism Team riders were already very familiar with the Vejle hills, the team having already participated in this race in the two previous instalments, in season 50 and season 51. With ethiopia Addis Gebreselassie having been in the line up every time, once finishing in 25th position as a hill helper for south Africa Xolani Lamola in season 50, and then finishing at a frustrating 4th place as a captain in season 51.

The intent was clear that season 52 had to be the season when the team of the international proletariat had to finally achieve a win in this very special race, with Addis Gebreselassie lining up as a captain again.

However, this was to be an uphill battle, with Belgium Matthy Bernage of Belgium sv racing united being on the starting line on the day, and appearing as an undisputed favourite, he would undoubtedly be the man to beat to keep alive the hopes of the working class.

Came the day of the race and the magic finally happened, ethiopia Addis Gebreselassie was able to counter the early attack of slovakia Bonifác Jurák of Belgium Vintage Mapei to secure this win, while super favourite Belgium Matthy Bernage of Belgium sv racing united was also part of the counter but could not make it count and landed at a modest third place.

Chairman uMaliyasi and the World Communism Team technical team could not hide their joy and excitement as Addis Gebreselassie raised his arms. With this result suddenly changing the perspective on a season 52 that thus far had been underwhelming.

Soon after, the team realized that Addis Gebreselassie was the First African, and first Afro-Caribbean rider to ever win this important event. Despite no less than 72 editions of this historic race having been completed.

With 100 OCM points freshly in the bag from that win, World Communism Team ensured its swift return to Division 6 racing.

Before its first Division 6 race after promotion, the team was still to race in spain Puertomingalvo - Alcalá de la Selva in Division 7, with hopes to secure a second win in a row, but the tides turned, ethiopia Addis Gebreselassie was not well positioned in the finale and only finished in 4th.

To open up a new Division 6 stint, the team had chosen to travel to the southernmost tip of the West African Island of São Tomé to race in hilly são tomé and príncipe Porto Alegre. Where ethiopia Addis Gebreselassie achieved 7th place, a modest but encouraging result, given that the team had not managed to score a single point in Division 6 during its previous visit to this tier of OCM racing.
